International Museum Day - 18 May 2021

ICOM Ireland is the voice of Irish museum professionals on the international stage and raises public cultural awareness through global networks and co-operation programmes.

ICOM first launched International Museum Day in 1977 to raise awareness that, “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples” and it continues to be a success year after year.

The theme for 2021 is The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine. As we all look forward to the future and the possibility of meeting and spending time with friends and family, our museums provide a safe space for our imaginations to roam and our minds to meet.

Dr Margarita Cappock introduces the theme for International Museum Day 2021.

Artefacts of Rebellious Ireland

To mark International Museum Day 2021, objects from around the country have been brought together online for the first time. They highlight some of the incredible stories relating to the War of Independence and the Civil War period and provide a unique snapshot of this watershed moment in our recent history.

Welcome Back!

Museums are about objects, but they are also about people, museum professionals from all over Ireland have recorded short videos telling the story of their museums and the incredible collections they hold.
